How to Keep Your Flowers Fresh Longer

Fresh flowers bring beauty and joy to any space, but in Hong Kong’s humid subtropical climate, cut flowers require extra care to stay vibrant. Follow these expert tips to extend the life of your bouquet.

1. Trim the Stems

Cut stems at a 45-degree angle with sharp scissors or a knife. This increases the surface area for water absorption and prevents the stem from sitting flat against the bottom of the vase. Trim 2–3 cm off the bottom before placing flowers in water, and re-trim every two days.

2. Use Clean Water & Vase

Always start with a thoroughly clean vase — bacteria is the number one enemy of cut flowers. Fill with room-temperature water and change it every 1–2 days. In Hong Kong’s warm weather, changing water daily is recommended. Add the flower food packet provided with your bouquet.

3. Remove Leaves Below the Waterline

Strip any leaves that would sit below the water surface. Submerged leaves rot quickly, promoting bacterial growth that clogs stems and shortens flower life. Keep only the leaves above the waterline for a cleaner, longer-lasting arrangement.

4. Keep Away from Heat & Direct Sun

Place your flowers in a cool spot away from direct sunlight, air conditioners, heaters, and ripening fruit. Fruit releases ethylene gas which accelerates wilting. In Hong Kong’s summer, avoid placing flowers near windows that receive direct afternoon sun.

5. Mist & Hydrate

Lightly mist petals with water once a day to maintain humidity, especially during Hong Kong’s dry winter months (November–February). This is particularly beneficial for roses, hydrangeas, and peonies, which absorb moisture through their petals.

Flower-by-Flower Care Tips

  • Roses: Remove guard petals (outer petals with blemishes). Re-cut stems daily. Roses drink heavily — keep water topped up.
  • Peonies: Arrive in bud form; bloom within 24–48 hours at room temperature. Keep in a cool spot for longer-lasting blooms.
  • Hydrangeas: These thirsty flowers benefit from a full soak — submerge the entire bloom head in cool water for 30 minutes if they begin to wilt.
  • Orchids: Keep stems in just 2–3 cm of water. Change water daily. Avoid touching petals — oils from hands cause browning.
  • Lilies: Remove pollen stamens as they open (use a tissue to avoid staining). This extends bloom life and prevents pollen stains on fabric.
  • Tulips: Continue growing in the vase — trim stems every other day as they lengthen. Keep in cool water away from direct light.

Hong Kong Humidity: Special Considerations

Hong Kong’s summer (May–September) brings extreme humidity (80–95%). In these conditions:

  • Change vase water daily — bacteria multiply faster in warm, humid conditions
  • Use fewer stems per vase for better air circulation
  • Remove any wilting flowers immediately to prevent mould spreading
  • Consider placing arrangements in air-conditioned rooms during the hottest hours
  • Avoid placing flowers in bathrooms — humidity + warmth accelerates decay
