Fresh flowers bring beauty and joy to any space, but in Hong Kong’s humid subtropical climate, cut flowers require extra care to stay vibrant. Follow these expert tips to extend the life of your bouquet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Trim the Stems<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Cut stems at a 45-degree angle with sharp scissors or a knife. This increases the surface area for water absorption and prevents the stem from sitting flat against the bottom of the vase. Trim 2\u20133 cm off the bottom before placing flowers in water, and re-trim every two days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Use Clean Water & Vase<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Always start with a thoroughly clean vase \u2014 bacteria is the number one enemy of cut flowers. Fill with room-temperature water and change it every 1\u20132 days. In Hong Kong’s warm weather, changing water daily is recommended. Add the flower food packet provided with your bouquet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Remove Leaves Below the Waterline<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Strip any leaves that would sit below the water surface. Submerged leaves rot quickly, promoting bacterial growth that clogs stems and shortens flower life. Keep only the leaves above the waterline for a cleaner, longer-lasting arrangement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Keep Away from Heat & Direct Sun<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Place your flowers in a cool spot away from direct sunlight, air conditioners, heaters, and ripening fruit. Fruit releases ethylene gas which accelerates wilting. In Hong Kong’s summer, avoid placing flowers near windows that receive direct afternoon sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Mist & Hydrate<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Lightly mist petals with water once a day to maintain humidity, especially during Hong Kong’s dry winter months (November\u2013February). This is particularly beneficial for roses, hydrangeas, and peonies, which absorb moisture through their petals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
